Today you’re going to learn all about a client of ours who came in scared about her recent MRI findings for her spine. She was so relieved to hear what I had told her today and we both agreed this is something that needs to be brought to attention to more people.
Also, I have many people who are surprised that I’m not too concerned with MRI findings and what this video will show you is the reason for this.
Below I discuss the difference between disk bulging and disk degeneration, what a research study can help us decipher between needing surgery or not, and how MRI’s can be confusing in regards to source of pain.
Watch the video first here:
A recent research study was able to take a bunch of people, who had NO SYMPTOMS or PAIN and conduct a MRI scan. The group was then placed according to age and these were the findings of how many had these findings:
Degeneration Bulge
30 year olds = 52% 30 year olds = 40%
50 year olds = 80% 50 year olds = 60%
70 year olds = 93% 70 year olds = 77%
This means that when a 50 year old woman walks into my clinic, I do not get too “surprised” about the findings of a disk bulge or disk degeneration, because the probability of each being present is so high already. What we do at The Physio Revolution is take into account the overall effect this MRI finding has on you personally and clinically.
What do I mean by “clinically”? Well, typically we mean what symptoms do you complain about, what aggravates or alleviates the discomfort you are feeling, what type of movements are you displaying, are there inconsistencies or poor functional movements that we can gain insight into helping fix so you can continue doing life as you please without discomfort. These give us SO MUCH MORE information than an MRI on how to move forward and help you relieve the discomfort and further progress towards doing the things you LOVE and DESIRE to keep doing.
The Physio Revolution team believes the best route is a conservative route first before needing unnecessary MRI’s, injections, or surgeries.
