“Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells… Oops there goes my back!” - The Physio Revolution

“Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells… Oops there goes my back!”

This is the new tune I’m working on right now…

My fiancé seems to think it’s not the catchiest title yet, but I’ll work on it…

It’s the happiest time of year, isn’t it?!

Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Years are right at our front door step.

This jingle I’m working on seems to be one of the common themes this holiday season…

If you are anything like me, you are either (mostly) sitting at your computer trying to hit the deadlines of shopping for gifts or (less often) physically browsing stores to avoid the rush for gift ideas.

I think majority of us are getting the hang of this online shopping thing when it comes to finding the BEST gift for our loved ones…

But, we also may be paying for that extra time spent on the computer.

The #1 type of client that we see at The Physio Revolution is someone who typically sits at a desk or does some sort of computer work often.

I would assume if it’s not in your job, you at least find yourself sitting at “your desk”, be it the table, your office area at home, or the couch with your laptop…

If you are that person, or you know of a loved one who is consistently barking about their back giving them issues or “going out” frequently…

Then this is important information I want you to have or share with your loved ones who have this concern too!

Let’s take a glance at my first posture vs. my second posture….

What do you notice?

Slouched in the first picture?   Maybe you can see how my head is pushed further forward too?

This is what begins to happen when we slouch or sag into a seat…

Our lower (lumbar) spine begins to round and the space between the back of the seat and the top of your buttocks region begins to increase…

Ultimately, this position can cause tissue in the back to stretch… longer than they would like… due to the rounded posture…

Which can, if not corrected with awareness and the CORRECT exercises begin to fail.

What does that mean, fail?

Well, it’s not like an “F” on a report card… and it’s not that it’s irreversible

It just means we can be more prone to feeling discomfort or having more frequent “episodes” of back pain…

Ideally, people who find themselves at a computer need to have a routine THEY STICK to and know EXACTLY how to reverse this prolonged position frequently throughout the day…

It could be that they just remind themselves to “sit up” like your Mom told you as a child…

But for most, it’s more than just that simple phrase…

The downfall is, most will teach you to “correct your posture” but our bodies are not meant to sustain a prolonged position in a “good” posture either…

So, there’s this sweet spot that takes place.

That’s what we teach at The Physio Revolution. Majority of these people who suffer with computer back pain just need a tool box to help relieve the stress and pressure that’s placed on the spine…

Take for instance one of our clients, Raelee.

She’s works in an office dealing with phone calls, stressful situations of deadlines, and computer work day in and day out.

She’s tried a stretching program previously that helped temporarily at times, but yet had discomfort after busier and longer days at her job.

After a few corrections at her desk and teaching the correct exercises and tools to reverse the posture she sustained all day, Raelee began to have more pain-free days than she could remember having painful days… even on the 10-12 hour shifts.

Now, she has a toolbox that she is able to use frequently and comes in only as needed after a few weeks with us.

One thing I did recommend to her is to use a McKenzie Lumbar Roll each day at her desk.  I use mine daily as well.

Here’s what it does:

This certain lumbar roll has the precise density foam that is best for starting to improve your posture at a desk. It gives a friendly reminder for postural corrections by pushing your spine into neutral position. As you can see, it has the loop to also maintain the height of where the lumbar roll should stay…

I have 3 (one for my desk, in the car, and my desk at home) and I recommend them often to all my back pain patients…

Or even if you are not currently suffering from back pain… it’s fantastic to keep your posture awareness healthy and this is how I help my patients do that.

You can find the roll here: The Original McKenzie Early Compliance Lumbar Roll – Low Back Support for Office Chairs and Car Seats
